Alabama, No. 3 nationally, unleashed its speed and the throwing-catching combination of Ken Stabler and Ray Perkins to overwhelm Nebraska, Big Eight champs, 34-7, before 82,000. By halftime it was 24-0 on a Les Kelly one-yard run, a 14-yard skitter by Stabler, and a seven-yard burst by Wayne Trimbel, plus Steve Davis’ field goal for three points. Davis hit again in the third period to make it 27-0 before Dick Davis scored on a 15-yard pass from Bob Churchich for the Huskers early in the fourth period. The game was more than sealed with a 45-yard Stabler-to-Perkins toss on the next possession.
