It seems that West Virginia, unlike South Carolina, doesn't even want to fight us for their coach. They've already reported that he's coming, and are basically just willing to hand him on over. Even the message boards are wanting to talk about who their next coach will be. That's just kinda weird to me.
WVmetronews.com has reported that, according to sources inside the West Virginia athletic department, Rodriguez is ready to accept the Alabama job, if offered, and is already talking to some of his assistants about following him to Tuscaloosa.
Very strange, especially when Mal just released a statement (which I think is complete crap, by the way) saying that they have not contacted any coach whose regular season isn't over. Click here to read the full statement.

Earlier, perhaps on this blog or another, I read Shaun Alexander said that we were pursing about four coaches that have already won a NC. If this is true, how many coaches are out there that have won NC’s? Who has been rumored to come but can be eliminated if SA is right about the NC’s? Could we be looking at coaches that have won NC at 1AA or D2 schools?
I will take the second question first. I have heard Rich Rodriquez, Houston Nutt, Bob Petrino, and Paul Johnson. None of these guys has won a NC so we can count them out.
So who has won a NC and is still coaching or will likely return to coaching? Going back to 1990, 15 different coaches have won a NC; Brown, Carroll, Saban, Tressell, Coker, Stoops, Bowden, Fulmer, Osborne, Carr, Spurrier, Stallings, James, Erikson, McCartney. Brown, Carroll, Tressell, Bowden, Carr all are secure in there jobs and presumably would not leave. A few rumors have mentioned Stoops’ name but I cannot see him leaving OU. I have heard Fulmer’s name mentioned as well but I cannot see him coming either. Tom Osborne is happily serving in congress, and if he did come back to football I cannot see him coaching anywhere than Lincoln. If Stallings were going to return to coaching, they would have already announced his hiring. James is seventy-something and has not coached sine ’93. McCartney seems happy leading the promise keepers and has not shown any interest in returning to coaching. Therefore, that leaves Saban, Coker, Spurrier, and Erikson. We know that BAMA is interested in both Spurrier and Saban, that is two or the four. Coker just won with the team that Davis built and ran the program into the ground so I hope he is not a candidate. Erikson is coaching at Idaho, so BAMA would definitely a step up for him. Erikson may be an interesting candidate. We will call him number three.
Therefore, if Alexander was right he must have been considering 1AA and D2 championships. If that is true then we can put Paul Johnson back on our list. That would make four.
Therefore, if Alexander was right then we are looking at Saban, Spurrier, Erikson, and Johnson. Saban and Spurrier both have denied any interest in coming to BAMA. I know that its typical coach speak to deny rumors but at least the Spurrier sounds legit. Now we are down to Erikson and Johnson.

In the 23 years from 1960-1982, Alabama won or shared the SEC title 13 times, meaning over half the SEC titles in that span (57%) went to one team. In the 23 years since (through 2005), the distribution is much more even: Florida 6 times (26%), Auburn and Tennessee 5 times each (22%), LSU 4 times (17%), Bama 3 times (13%) and Georgia 2 times (9%) (figures are rounded, plus shared titles are included so percentages don't add up to 100). THAT is the new reality. Even if somehow the Bear did come back from the dead to coach, it's just not the same SEC from 25 years ago, and I doubt even he would be able to dominate the SEC since the NCAA tends to frown on the open payment of players and other forms of cheating.
