My true concern is that we didnt have a good plan in place before firing shula!!!! Im starting to feel like it was a spur of the moment decision. You cant assume that these coaching "elite" will come running at the opportunity to coach here at a moments notice right amist the bowl season!!!! Why didnt they wait to fire him, or at least have a verbal committment first? Cant say that I completely disagree with you. But, when i say have a commitment, I mean a verbal agreement on the sly. Not openly interviewing for his job in front of him. I'm not going to pretend that I know how things work in the AD at a major university, but i do know how things work in a large corporation.
I dont think that firing him w/o a concrete plan was a good idea because of the ramifications on recruiting, players, and public image of the program while not having someone at the helm. That is my concern. We are in the middle of recruiting season, and not having a coach to sell is not good. Selling the university itself is usually not enough. We need to total package to offer kids.

Are you idiots not aware that SOS runs the spread offense. See "Spread Offense" on Wikepedia.org. There are several derivations of the spread offense. RR is currently running the "spread option" because it suits his personel. If JPW is the beast quarterback we have (and I have every reason to believe he is) then RR can run a form of the spread that is similar to what Texas Tech and South Carolina run. Dont forget that our coaching staff spent alot of time up in West Virginia in the offseason learning this system. It was either Kines learning how to defend it or Shula trying to learn it himself. Or Mal could have set this up knowing what might happen down the road. It makes you wonder....

I live in Tampa. The UofA plane was here today, but I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that Jon Gruden is NOT going to leave the NFL. First, he makes 5 million a year. Second, he will have at least one more year in Tampa mainly because the Bucs will have 27 million to use on free agents next year and even though he is losing this year, he gets a free pass with the Super Bowl win a few years back. They could have been speaking with Jim Leavitt at USF (also in Tampa). I dont think Leavitt will leave because he has brought USF from club football to being on the verge of a BCS Bowl game since they play in the weak Big East. As Bear built UA, Leavitt will some day have buildings, streets, and statues of himself at USF. I believe the UofA plane was in Tampa to make sure Robert Marve (stud QB at Plant High School in Tampa) doesnt switch his decision from Bama. I agree SM. The BAMA Nation is getting desperate when the name Steve Spurrier is linked to coaching at Alabama. He has NO loyalty...he isnt even loyal to UF where he played, won a heisman, won a NC, and is inducted into their ring of honor. The following is from ESPN's "Football 101" column about Rich Rodriguez's system. The guy's an offensive genius AND a disciplinarian. He's the one we want.
------------------------------------ Team building West Virginia does a great job with team building. The Mountaineers' staff does some different things to develop unity. WVU's team building ideas include some simple rules:
• No cell phones in the football building The staff wants players talking to each other, not girlfriends or friends, during football time.
• Name game Every player must know the name of every person involved with the program, including cooks, janitors, managers, trainers, secretaries, etc. That sounds simple, but when you have over 200 people involved in a program, it is not. Rodriguez hands out pictures to help the players identify the staff, and then tests the players.
• Accountability In the offseason, Rodriguez divides his team into eight different groups consisting of players from a variety of positions. Then he sets up a point system under which the groups are rewarded or punished based on individuals' academics, offseason program and off-field issues. Spurrier would not tell his kids that they are stuck with him and then leave. If he did, then we must question his character. Do we want someone that would go there? I believe Spurrier is in the twilight of his coaching career. He can win 6-7 games a year at USC, play golf twice a week and enjoy life. At Bama, he would have to win at least 8 games a year, and beat Auburn every other year just to keep the BOT off his back. Does he really want that kind of pressure at 62? To the anonymous Petrino lover: Shut the f*&% up!! There are 115 comments on this blog, but about 1/3 are just you screaming PETRINO in all caps. First, JPW isn't winning a Heisman. Second, you have absolutely no basis for saying that RR's offense "gets QBs killed." Third, how in the hell did you conclude that RR can't coach the passing game? You realize that this isn't his first season coaching football, right? When he was OC at Tulane, his QB set the NCAA single season record for pass efficiency rating and threw for over 340 yards per game. He simply fits his system to match his personnel.
Here's what I suggest. Take off your knee pads and remove Petrino's cock from your mouth. Use your spare time (we know you have some since you've posted the same friggin' message 8 times on every 'Bama bulletin board) to do some research and come up with something educated to say. UA reps talk to Spurrier Representatives of the University of Alabama spoke directly with South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier today, according to three sources close to Alabama’s coaching search and one source close to Spurrier.
At one point of the day, Spurrier seemed favorable toward the opportunity, the source close to Spurrier said.
By the end of the day, The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C., reported that Spurrier told his team that he was not leaving them. A report from WLTX News19 in Columbia said Spurrier told his players “some of you might not like me, but you’re stuck with me.”

Louisville runs some spread passing, Sprea dis one-back, shotgun stuff. Rich uses TEs, Meyer fixe dhis "finesse" spread with a TE, Rod does not run a "finesse" spread, this guy is running a power scheme and tons of other stuff that blows the doors off people, the USF loss was minor, there were problems in that game.

BAMA HAS A NEW COACH!!!!! According to a reliable source, Chuck Norris has accepted the position of head coach at the University of Alabama. He is scheduled to arrive in Tuscaloosa by fiery chariot at 3:00 pm tomorrow.
Although he has no prior head coaching experience, Norris is believed to have used his patented roundhouse kick to travel back in time and take 20 years of coaching lessons from the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. Norris also holds the coveted rank of "houndstooth belt" in kung fu. Norris is not expected to be introduced at a press conference, as everyone knows damn well who he is. The more I think about it and the more I read up on it, the more fired up I'm getting on Rich Rodriguez!
I think he will be an EXCELLENT choice for the job and will bring instant success to the program. It may take longer to get the system he has going full speed, but JPW ran a similar system in high school, Greg McElroy did as well, and with Upchurch in the backfield, watch out! I just hope he could keep Paw Paw Kines from going to Texas!!
Perhaps we will end up with a better choice than the old ball coach after all. Besides, Spurrier is older and Rodriguez is a younger fellow with many years to go. His demeanor and style will bring instant credibility back to our program.

From Joe Schad's blog today (ESPN.com): "The rumors on Thursday that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier had accepted an offer from Alabama are simply not true. Neither are the ones that he had scheduled a meeting with Alabama or received an offer from the Tide. There is a faction of the Alabama community that badly wants to land Spurrier, but don't expect it to happen as the decision-makers don't necessarily want to go in that direction. In fact, the far more likely scenario is Spurrier landing a big raise from the Gamecocks. This is in negotiation. However, I'm told the top candidates from Alabama's perspective right now are Spurrier, Rich Rodriguez, Jim Grobe, Paul Johnson and Jeff Tedford. Potential candidates not likely to get involved include Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino, Houston Nutt, Frank Beamer and Mike Riley. So the guy who keeps touting Petrino should shut the fuck up. I'm told Alabama is going to take its time on this hire, wanting badly to get it right. The final decision will be made by the president and the athletic director only. One person close to the situation predicted Alabama could be the last of the major job openings to fill. Rodriguez, in my estimation, is the place to put your bets. To get off of the Alabama coaching search for a second....let me ask you guys what you think about Southern Cal getting the opportunity to play again for a NC? I say that losing to Oregon State should automatically take them out. Michigan lost on the road to Ohio State. Florida lost to Auburn in a close game on the road. A one loss team in the SEC or Big Ten is much more qualified than a one loss team in the Pac 10. I am getting tired of these pansy azz writers out west and ESPN stroking the Trojans all the time. Urban Meyer said it best when he said 'it's tough to get style points in the SEC'! If you put USC or Ohio State in the SEC, I guarrantee they have at least one loss if not more....
