Getting quiet now
Right now is the most critical time period. If you'll notice, the guys that I know that really know what's going on have all gotten silent. Even on the message boards it's happening that way.

Right now is the waiting period. Does he say yes or no? He has already agreed...in principle. They agreed back in Gainesville on Sept. 30th. The issue now is will he actually sign the contract?

If Spurrier gets cold feet, then Rodriguez will be announced on either Sunday or Monday, from what I'm being told. Rodriguez wouldn't get anything NEAR the same kinda money that Spurrier would...but that doesn't matter. He wants to win, and he can do that here. I'm just curious if he can win consistently.

Comments: They agreed back in September? I don't believe that for a second...

# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 10:57 AM   I don't necessarily agree with the way Shula was informed, but he had to go. Is it Mal's fault (and I'm no Mal supporter...unless he lands Spurrier or Saban), but is it Mal's fault Shula avoided calls? Shula is not innocent in this. He expected a call, it came - many times - and he chose not to answer.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 10:57 AM   It's tougher to say no in person than it is through an agent or over the phone. Steve know's we're after him. He'll listen to Mal and if he's interested, he'll come. If he's not, he won't. Sounds too simple to be true, doesn't it...
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 11:00 AM   Well said MT
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 11:03 AM   Anybody know if Mal's job is in jeopardy here? If he did not have somebody lined up and has to settle for his second or third choice, does he get canned?
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 11:17 AM   if he had someone lined up then he lied at the press conf. when he said "i have not talked to any one about this job"-and, if that is true, what an error in strategy that will hurt recruiting.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 11:27 AM   I don't believe Mal worked this deal out. Remember, the meeting in Gainesville was with the BOT.

So Mal could have been telling the truth when he said that HE hadn't talked to anyone regarding this job.

Bottom line, you don't fire somebody without a plan in place.

Same way you don't quit a job without a plan in place. Hence why Steve hasn't resigned yet, and hasn't given any credence to the Alabama rumors.

I know that if I were to be talked to by a competing company, I definitely would not talk to my current employer about it.
# posted by Blogger Memphis Tider : 11:36 AM   Spurrier reportedly is or was upset because Carolina had promised him new facilities and a bunch of other bennies and nothing has been forth coming. If the money is right and he has control of the program the way he wants, he'll take the job at Bama. Remeber money talks...
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 11:53 AM   Last post is correct about USC promising OBC new facilities and still have not raised the money. I have a great friend that is a big booster at USC and he confirmed that to me when all this came up about SS/Bama.

Comment: Looks like you are onto something. Meeting in St Augustine, but the SC plane has already departed for Columbia? Did they drop Spurrier off or are we chasing him around the country? It will be interesting to see how long N10MD stays in St Augustine.

Comment: www.flightaware.com UA Plane: N10MD SC Plane: N703JT Both have arrived in St. Augustine this morning. Looks like something is going down in Florida. I think SS will take the job, there is no other reason to fuel the fires of these rumors and disrupt your team by meeting with another school. If a decision is reached today (yes or no) look for a leak soon after.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 12:21 PM   IF THERE WAS NOTHING TO IT WE WOULD HAVE BY NOW HEARD SS SAY "I AM NOT GOING TO ALABAMA". TOO MUCH AT RISK WITH SC PLAYERS TO NOT BE DEFINITIVE ON THIS ISSUE. WE WILL SOON GET SOME HARD INFO ON THIS.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 12:38 PM   I just had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine that is an Alabama booster. He said the UA jet had left T-Town this morning and flew to Mobile, Pensacola, then Lakeland and is going to Tampa. It is picking up members of the BOT along the way and they are heading to Fla. to meet with Spurrier. Whether there is any truth to this, is hard to say. I do think it's interesting though.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 12:57 PM   SS is not going anywhere! Steve is a cock and will be for the remainder of his career. Sorry!
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 1:14 PM   Why is everyone so convinced that this gig is even an attractive spot to the top-flight guys anymore? A lot of time has passed since Bear, and while everyone has been so busy clinging to the glory days of the 60s and 70s, the program got passed by LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and - yes - Auburn. Over the past 24 years, the program has been victimized more by impatience and the refusal to look forward instead of backward than anything else. In the meantime, the Arkansas' and South Carolinas' of the conference have caught up and are now on a relatively equal footing. So really, what is the incentive for someone like Spurrier to come? Unless it is just for gobs of cash, why does it make ANY sense that Spurrier would leave SC for a program that is currently on equal footing with his own, when he also knows that if/when he doesn't win a national title within 4 years everyone will be calling for his head? For all his years with the Gators, he only managed one title, so for crying out loud, why is he suddenly thought to be the second-coming?
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 1:20 PM   has anyone noticed that everyone who brings up the bear on these blogs ARE NOT the bama fans

y'all know if there was a coach at SC or auburn or where ever that had won 6 NC's and went to a bowl game every year he coached there... you would still be remembering him too
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 1:26 PM   To the post "Steve is a cock for life", I have big money that says you are 100% wrong...be ready to eat those words big boy!
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 1:33 PM   I for one could care less if he goes to Bama. And you can say all you want, it is and always will be THE University of Alabama. It is steeped in tradition. Most of you guys that bash Bama haven't even been on the campus. Damn man it's Holy ground to the Bama faithful. Yeah there will always be those that want the coaches head after a so-so season, but they really are in the minority. I'll take any coach that can do a good job. And you are wrong about that equal footing BS. Tradition is what makes a college great. The Arkansas' and South Carolina's will never equal Bama, it's as simple as that. I have been to every campus in the SEC and I can tell you, none of them have the same "feel" that the capstone does. If Spurrier comes to Alabama, good, but I couldn't give two tinker's damn about it one way or the other. There are other fine coaches out there that want to come to Bama.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 1:43 PM   From everything I've read, it is fairly obvious that an offer either has been made or is about to be made (don't believe this talk of a Sept 30th agreement at all). At the end of the day, I just don't see what Spurrier gains by accepting that he doesn't already have - a move now would only be driven by money or pure ego. Betting money is that he gets the offer - respectfully turns it down, and that the fall-back offer goes to Rodriguez. The quote from RR's radio show the other night is pretty telling that something is up - especially when coupled with this week's Charleston Daily Mail article saying that it appears something is afoot at the WVU Athletic Department but nobody is talking. Hope I'm wrong, because he'll get eaten alive.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 2:04 PM   I tend to agree with the Spurrier commt about what does he gain, He would have another shot at a national title, but no guantee for sure. He has also shown class in his talks about other people & what his team is doing. But he is still in the twilight of his career, Rob isn't a bad deal for Bama
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 2:20 PM   Alabama is tradition and that goober that said everyone else has passed us by has never sat in BD and watched the big screen and listened to the Bear and watched highlights of our tradition. I have done it every year for the past 22 years and it brings chills to me everytime. You can take that cock crowing, that tiger roar, and that bulldog bark and stick them back in your wallet with you free slurpie coupon and your picture of Aunt Bee. Bama has more tradition than any other school in the SEC. Why would SS want to come to Bama? Go visit USC and then walk on the Capstone and tell me why you bone head! I
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 2:40 PM   DITTO - ROLL TIDE!!!!
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 2:50 PM   I can tell you what Spurrier tends to gain at Bama. He can roll himself in the Crimson and white tradition. He will never have to worry about money again. He will have a statue of himself out front of Bryant-Denny. If he comes to Bama, he'll be in the company of many great figures past and present. He'll have new facilities for his players. He'll have a venue that seats 92,000 to see him win a national title. He's never going to win another national title at Carolina.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 2:57 PM   "Alabama is tradition and that goober that said everyone else has passed us by has never sat in BD and watched the big screen and listened to the Bear and watched highlights of our tradition."

I've forgotten more about college football than you've learned in entire your lifetime, jackass - I know all about the traditions in Tuscaloosa and what that program means to all of you. I also asked a very fair question about what Spurrier gains by leaving SC for a program that is currently on par with his own? All I got back was a laundry list of all the PAST accomplishments of the program - not a single thing that would actually entice him to abandon a program that he is trying to build a tradition for NOW (did you ever think THAT might actually be an attractive part of the SC job for him? every success they have from now on will be credited to, or compared to what he does).

If everything in the sport were determined by tradition, then lets just hand the damn trophy to Notre Dame every year and call it quits. Facts are facts - there are 5 premiere programs in the conference RIGHT NOW and not one of them is named Alabama. You haven't played a meaningful season since Gene Stallings roamed the sidelines in a blazer so loud it could be seen from space.

Keep in mind - SC still (for the time being anyway) has something you don't have - Steve Spurrier. At the end of the day, what is going to land you that next blue-chip 18-year old recruit? Knowing you can follow the visor back to Columbia, or listen to people like you drone on and on about the '79 Sugar Bowl?
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 3:33 PM   Hey anonymous Gamecock--

We haven't played a meaningful season since Gene Stallings? Obviously you HAVE forgotten an awful lot about football. SEC champs, 1999 baby!!!! ROLL TIDE!!!!!

What was South Carolina doing in 1999? Oh, that's right--going 0-11. Stupid doofus asshole.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 3:47 PM   nicer facilities, more money, better recruiting... that's why he's coming to t-town

also, bill oliver, who wouldn't go to SC w/ him will go to bama
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 3:49 PM   This is great! Some moroon writes that he knows more about college football than anybody else and then wants to know why SS would leave USC for a program on the same level. Once again, you are a bigger goober than I thought! Have you ever been to BD and have you ever been to USC's field? Yes, before you ask, I have been to both. I was recruited by both and I played for Bama. You want a short list:dorms, weight room, practice faclities, locker rooms, stadium, campus facilities, education level, and the list could go on forever. I don't care if SS comes or not but you obviuosly have no clue about what you are talking about.
# posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 4:27 PM   I am a Bama fan living in SC. Just saw on the news that Spurrier told his team at 2:00 today (Thursday) that he is not going anywhere. Guess that ends it
